As traditional pensions decline and other retirement expenses, such as health care, increase, affording retirement has become an even greater challenge. \u00a0My work as a financial planner used to be running analysis to best optimize retirement income and improve longevity of assets, even going as far as developing strategies to manage the surplus. \u00a0It was rare that the ability to afford retirement at a specific age was called into question.<\/p>\n

These days, it\u2019s a completely different story. \u00a0More and more, the question is, \u201cWill I ever be able to afford to retire? \u00a0At least in a time frame where I can still enjoy it? ” \u00a0There\u2019s an overwhelming sense of disappointment that these clients have. \u00a0This isn\u2019t how they envisioned their retirement prospects. \u00a0Though, their inability to afford retirement isn\u2019t a complete surprise to them, there\u2019s still a sense of being gypped. \u00a0And that\u2019s where the hopelessness sometimes settles in. \u00a0That\u2019s the part that really gets to me. \u00a0And let me tell you it\u2019s really gotten to me. \u00a0Gotten to me so much that it\u2019s inspired me to start researching the issue.<\/p>\n

There are lots of studies on our current retirement crisis. \u00a0We can read all about the ever-increasing cost of retirement, dwindling pensions, and the potential demise of social security. \u00a0We can study numbers and statistics but the numbers aren\u2019t going to provide the kind of help we need right now.<\/p>\n

My hope is by hearing the stories of those that have retired and those planning to retire soon I can, not only better understand the challenges facing retirees, but also learn what\u2019s working. \u00a0What are the elements that make a happy, successful retirement? \u00a0How have retirees\u00a0adapted to the challenges? \u00a0I want to know what the numbers can\u2019t tell me. \u00a0Real stories from real people are much more effective in providing insight, the kind of insight that can provide hope and real solutions.<\/p>\n
